Breaking up with your abusive ex’s tech

From GPS tracking to account security, managing technology after a dangerous breakup can be a scary and frustrating exercise in digital survival. Genuine stalkerware needs to be handled carefully if you’re concerned that gaining digital independence from an abusive person could anger them and endanger you further. Even if you haven’t found stalkerware on your phone or computer, you should consider taking the following steps to improve your personal safety if you are concerned an abusive ex may have access to your online life.

We urge caution here. There could be risks associated with revoking an abusive person’s access to your accounts and devices. You should consult with domestic violence services if you think you’re in danger. In their digital safety checklist, the Coalition Against Stalkerware advises caution when removing suspected stalkerware.

“If you delete stalkerware, whoever installed it would know that it’s been disabled. So it’s important to understand that before taking any action, and to have a safety plan ready. One of the points of this plan may be: contact organizations working with victims of domestic violence,” the coalition writes.

Eva Galperin, director of cybersecurity policy at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, helps people who are concerned a partner or ex might be accessing their data. “The good news when it comes to account security is, we have things that we can tell people to do,” she said at a presentation on her work in January.

Also be aware that anyone with access to your web history could later be able to see that you’ve viewed this page, so consider clearing your internet history before logging off. If you need a hand, check out our explainer on how to delete your Google history.

    Disable GPS tracking

If you share a joint phone account with your ex, you’ll need to talk with your service provider about removing your ex from the account or, at the very least, ensuring your ex doesn’t have access to network-provided location tracking services such as those available with the AT&T FamilyMap service.

The service only works for mobile phone lines on the same billing account or that have the Secure Family Companion app installed and paired with the parent device, according to a spokesperson from AT&T.

“Any device that is part of the group receives a monthly reminder text message that they have the service, which includes the parent device phone number,” the spokesperson said. “Uninstalling the companion app and turning off location sharing on their device would prevent their location from appearing in the parent app.”

The Find My app (formerly Find My Friends) from Apple can also be used to stalk family members. If you have this app installed, you might want to uninstall or disable it to prevent location data from getting out further. If you set up Family Sharing and use Location Sharing, your family members automatically appear in the People tab.

To see people with whom you are sharing your location, go to the People tab in Find My. When someone shares their location with you, you can choose to share your location back or not.

There are two ways to stop sharing your location. You can stop sharing with everyone by turning off Share My Location in the Me tab. Or you can stop sharing your location with a particular person by selecting Stop Sharing My Location in the People tab.

If you stop sharing your location in Find My, the person won’t receive a notification, but they won’t be able to see you on their list of friends. If you re-enable sharing, they get a notification that you’ve started sharing your location with them.

Notably, if you delete an iMessage conversation you’ve had with someone who you’ve also shared your location with, iMessage will also prompt you with a dialogue box asking if you would like to stop sharing your location.

You can also review CNET’s list of common tracking apps and features and check whether any have been installed or activated on your phone.

If you still have access to all of your social media accounts, avoid checking into businesses or locations you visit while using those apps. Don’t add your location to your tweets or your Facebook and Instagram posts when prompted. Make sure your phone’s GPS feature is turned off, and then review your phone’s list of GPS-enabled apps.

    Buy a burner

If you’re concerned your phone’s security could be compromised, either by stalkerware or an application with intrusive access, it might be best to buy an inexpensive prepaid phone and plan at your local retailer. Commonly known as “burners,” these phones can be used to privately contact domestic violence assistance resources and generally conduct your business outside of an abusive person’s control.

Police departments and domestic violence services can sometimes provide you with a burner phone, said Brian Franke, a police officer in Longmont, Colorado, who works with people who worry they’re being spied on through their phones.

Don’t get rid of your normal phone right away, Franke said. That would tip off an abusive partner that they’ve lost access to all your communications.

“Keep using it as you are, or start gradually paring it down,” he said of your normal phone, “and use this other phone for those communications you don’t want them to know about.”

Create new a new email account

Regardless of whether you’re planning to keep your previous email address, creating a new email address ensures that any immediate mail you need to send or receive can be accessed outside of your ex’s view. If you can, set up the new email address using a burner phone or other device that your ex has never had access to. Consider using public computers at your local library if possible.

    Reset your devices

Shared laptops, tablets, phones or any internet-connected device that your ex has had contact with should be treated as suspect. Rooting out malicious applications on a one-by-one basis might not be a feasible option. In which case, consider creating a backup of important files and photos from the device and then having the device itself completely erased via a factory reset at a local retailer or independent repair shop.

If you’re concerned about being able to get to a shop, you can still wipe and reset your phone using our instructional guide.

Change account passwords and lockdown privacy settings

If you suspect your ex has access to any of your online accounts, it’s best to reset passwords for all of them. Start with your email address and bank account passwords, then do the same for all social media accounts and any online utility or bill-paying accounts. When resetting passwords, don’t use a previous password from another site. If possible, use a password manager, such as 1Password or LastPass, to create a randomly generated code.

CNET has looked at password managers in the past, examining Bitwarden and others.

After resetting your social media account passwords, check the privacy settings of each account and lock down your profiles. In the case of Facebook, this also means reviewing which other apps have access to your Facebook account. While you’re at it, check out CNET’s list of Facebook-specific privacy steps you can take to keep your account more secure.

This may also be a good time to ask friends, family and co-workers not to tag you in any social media posts for a while, especially if those posts include information that could potentially identify your whereabouts or activity. While you’re at it, ask them not to give information about you to your ex in general. Many abusive partners will try to get information out of other people in their target’s life, the EFF’s Galperin said.

Don’t forget to check accounts associated with your phone or smart speaker, like your Google ID, Apple ID or Amazon. These accounts typically show you a history of which devices have logged into the accounts and from what location. You can revoke access to devices you don’t recognize.

To check whether your ex is looking at your Google account, sign in to your Gmail account and scroll to the bottom of the page. You’ll see a line that says “Last account activity.” Click Details to see when, how and where your account is being used. If you suspect any unsafe activity, click on the button labeled Sign out of all other Gmail web sessions.

Check our guides for instructions on locking down your Amazon account. Then, do the same for your Apple account, if you use an iPhone ($699 at Apple) or Mac.

    Boost your login security

On each of the accounts mentioned above — and on most social media and online service accounts — you should have the option to enable two-factor authentication, which is commonly referred to as 2FA. As the name suggests, two-factor authentication requires two ways of proving your identity, which can help keep an ex out even if he or she somehow obtains your new passwords.

Most 2FA features offer the option of a login coupled with a verification text sent to your phone. In the case of locking your ex out of your device altogether, consider enabling biometric authentication features such as iris scan or fingerprint reader options on your phone.

Another option is to get a physical hardware security key for your device. Increasingly popular, the USB-based device functions for your phone or laptop much the same as a house key does for your front door.

    Don’t forget Alexa

If you have smart speakers in your home which are capable of unlocking doors or giving information using voice commands, change your PIN codes and passwords for these immediately and be sure that your ex’s phone no longer has permission to connect with the smart devices.

Unfortunately, you may have to repeat this process for each different smart device you have in your home if you’re looking to ensure total lockdown.

What to Do When Chasing Your Dreams Becomes Boring

The one obstacle no one talks about (and how to overcome it).

Here’s a truth no one tells you about following your dreams: At some point, you’re going to get tired of it.

I don’t mean you’ll get discouraged. You’re going to get bored.

The thing is, most people who follow their dreams love a challenge. They love being dared to do something no one thinks they can do.

When we get an idea we pounce on it like a cat before it can scurry away. Starting new things — big or small, no matter how scary — gives us an adrenaline rush (probably) akin to jumping off a plane.

The problem is that once the excitement fades, we get bored. We’re not necessarily impatient, but we get tired of the familiar. The same routines. The same work.

This is a problem. Here’s why.

The One Obstacle No One Tells You About

    Boredom is a dream killer.

We don’t like being bored, so once we are, we quit. Even worse, we assume that because we’re jaded, we’ve fallen out of love with what we do (which is also why we give up).

Instead of spending years developing one skill, as we should, we jump from ship to ship, finding new pirates to fight and planks to jump off of.

We become entrepreneurs and writers and even musicians all in one year. It’s not a matter of whether things are working out or not. Even if the numbers are in our favor, if we’re bored, we’ll move on.

I’m in that space right now. That “bored phase” where everything is familiar. It makes me want to quit writing on Medium and find a new platform to write on, a new trial to tackle. It has nothing to do with the platform itself — it’s me.

    My routine has worn out.

One Question You Need to Ask Yourself

Your solution to boredom is probably the same as mine: move the hell on. But you don’t want to do that — not deep down, anyway. You like what you’re doing. You want to stick around for years and years.

But holy shit, you’re bored. You need that adrenaline rush from a new challenge.

What’s a better solution? What can you do so that you don’t quit? You find challenges within this career. Not outside of it.

You need to ask yourself: How can I change things up?

Instead of going to another city to traverse, you need to find a different part of that same city to explore. An unknown one that will spark that excitement you miss and pull you out of the familiar you’ve come to despise.

    What You’re Missing

Right now, I’m bored because I realized I’ve said everything I need to say about the topics I’ve been writing about.

Tom Kuegler said it best in an article recently:
“Most writers write about the same 5 things over and over again. We do this really cool thing where we say it in different ways, though, and the audience buys it as something new. There’s no swindling going on — we’re not tricking anybody — it’s just a natural step in the creative process.”
It’s normal for creators to get burnt out because they get stuck in the same routine. You need to find a solution.

My solution as a writer? Find something new to write about. You need something new to cook, to record, to draw, to paint. You haven’t lost your love for what you do — you lost your love for your system.

You need a new challenge. A new topic. A new muse. A new location. You love the struggle, so give yourself one. You don’t have to jump into a whole new journey and ruin what you’ve got going for you.

Find one thing, big or small, and start doing it differently. If you make YouTube videos, it might not be the content you need to change. Maybe you should learn to edit your videos better, more professionally. If you’re a writer, you could attempt to write a short story per week.

    Challenges Are Everything

Right now, you’re doing work that you don’t need to think hard about anymore. It’s passive — almost unconscious. You sit, and you work without worry that you’ll struggle.

You might be able to live with that for a while, but eventually, you’re going to miss the hurdles. You’re going to miss messing up and feeling determined that you’re going to figure out how to jump over the next obstacle.

I’ve been spending my time writing articles I already know how to write. I was bored. Writing this right now? I’m not bored.

I submitted this piece to this publication thinking it’d be accepted as usual. Instead, the wonderful Nicole Akers had notes. “Make it deeper,” she said. “Share a story.”

I didn’t know what I was going to do. I barely had any idea what she meant. I re-read my article, and I knew what the problem was, but I didn’t know how to fix it.

I started writing about it, and I realized: my struggle is what this piece is all about. This is a test.

I was stressed because I didn’t know how to fix it, but I liked that I had to figure something out. I liked that someone told me to do something I didn’t know how to do.

This is what writing — what all art is about: challenging yourself to be better even if you don’t think you can be. It keeps chasing your dreams exciting. It doesn’t have to be redundant.

Seek the tests. Don’t run away from them.

What If You Don’t Know What to Change?

Learn something new. Open your mind to new ideas by watching videos, admiring other people’s work, and reading books. Ask people for advice and ask them where you can improve.

You’ll gain new knowledge and ideas. Learning will give you the challenges you need because when you learn something new, you have to apply the advice.

It’s an opportunity for you to step out of your comfort zone. Take advantage of that. Don’t let the knowledge go through one ear and out through the other.

New ideas will challenge what you know.

If you’re a makeup artist, take an online class. If you’re a writer, buy books about writing. If you’re a baker, play around with the old to create something new.

    Final Words

I had a coaching call with Ayodeji Awosika last month. He gave me new tips to apply, articles to write, and more. It was a lot, but for the month, I was on it. All I wanted to do was write because I had new things to try.

That’s the power of challenging yourself. Of aiming to be better. It keeps the spark alive and ensures your dream doesn’t die.

You don’t have to abandon what you know. I’m not going to give up on Medium just because I’m bored.

You’re not an all-knowing expert who knows everything about their job and career. Find out what you don’t know, and then do something about it. Spark excitement within.

Don’t find a new box to jump in — make the one you know bigger.

6 Tips to Stay Healthy as a Software Developer

Your health should come before your work

Extended periods of sitting increases your risk of chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. It can also be bad for your mental health.

It’s essential to develop healthy habits as early as you can to counter these risks. I’ll share six crucial tips that helped me improve my health as a software developer.

    1. Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is underrated. It’s the foundation of your health. So why do we need it so badly? There are various reasons — these are a few found by scientists:
    • All kinds of tasks appear to be more challenging when you’re deprived of sleep
    • The ability to recall and use newly learned information relies on sleep, studies have found
    • Scientists also discovered that sleep helps your immune system function best. While sleeping, immune cells, known as T cells, spend that time racing around our bodies.
    • Sleep loss triggers the same brain mechanisms that make us sensitive to anxiety. In one study where the participants were sleep-deprived for just one night, their anxiety levels increased by 30% the next day.
So how can you improve your sleep? It differs for everyone. What worked for me was going to bed earlier, so I could sleep 7-8 hours each night.

    2. Eat and Drink Healthy

The average American eats roughly 17 tablespoons of added sugar every day, with almost half coming from soda. Soda is easy to take in, and it doesn’t make you feel satiated that much, while it still contains lots of calories. Stop drinking soda!

Another one:Switch your snacks to fruit. I’ll admit that often I’m just too lazy to prepare the fruit, even though I love eating it. It’s simply too hard to resist other easy-to-grab alternatives.

I solved my lack of fruit eating by making it part of my daily routine. When I leave for work, I take two pieces of fruit with me. Because fruit has become an easy option — I put it right in front of me on my desk — I eat fruit instead of getting an unhealthy snack.

    3. Watch Your Posture

Photo by Samuel Sun on Unsplash

Here are some basics regarding a proper workplace:
    • Use a decent desk — it should be height-adjustable
    • Use a good chair that’s highly adjustable
    • Position your monitor, mouse, and keyboard correctly
Properly set up your desk, chair, and monitor height and distance. How to do this correctly is beyond the scope here; consult a professional or google around for tips and tricks. There are plenty.

    4. Don’t Get Cold

Photo by Spencer Backman on Unsplash

Even when it’s hot outside, we often feel cold. There are two major reasons for this:
    • You’re sitting inside an air-conditioned office most of the time
    • You’re not moving
The big problem here is we often ignore this slightly cold feeling. However, if you’re cold, your body tenses. A tense body is no good for your posture, your muscles, and so on. Luckily, the solution is simple.

Always bring a vest, jacket, sweater, or whatever works for you to keep yourself warm and comfortable behind that desk.

    5. Move!

Photo by Guilherme Stecanella on Unsplash

Move that body — it’s super important. Sitting still all day has some serious downsides:
    • It increases your risk of chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers
    • It can lead to problems with your hip joints
    • It can cause problems with your back, especially if you consistently sit with poor posture
    • It can also be bad for your mental health — the risk of both anxiety and depression is higher in people that sit more
    • It causes stiffness in your neck and shoulders
You don’t have to join a gym — I know, I hate them, too. Simple changes in your routines and habits will already reduce the risks involved with sitting too much:
    • Walk or cycle to work
    • Take a walk during lunchtime
    • Use software like Stretchly or Workrave to remind yourself to take regular breaks
The big trick is to make your workout part of your daily routine

It doesn’t matter too much what you do: walking, running, cycling, going to the gym, or doing a workout at home using an app. Find out what works for you, and don’t give up on it.

    6. Meditate

Don’t forget your mind. Mindfulness meditation is a simple way to start taking care of it.

Anybody can meditate. There’s no magic to it, and it’s not difficult. But it does require practice. You can’t become mindful by just reading about it for the same reasons you can’t become a guitar virtuoso by just reading about it.

Photo by Sage Friedman on Unsplash

This is how it works. While trying to be present and focusing on one thing, usually your breathing, your brain will wander off:
    • Thoughts will pop into your head
    • Sounds may distract you
    • You will feel an itch somewhere in your body — or maybe some pain or discomfort
You will continuously lose focus! And that’s a good thing; it’s exactly what mindfulness is about. It’s about noticing these distractions, becoming aware of them, and then letting them go, only to regain focus again. What you’re training is attention to your body and mind.

Thoughts and feelings you’d previously have ignored, not noticed at all, or, perhaps, freaked out about, will now be met with a gentle, nonjudgemental, observing, and curious mind. You learn to create space between a thought or feeling and your response to it. You’ll choose your response wisely, instead of instinctively.

I try to meditate daily, just for ten minutes. Meditation is easy; making it a routine is hard. But once it’s a routine, you’ll reap the benefits.

If you don’t want to spend money on a mindfulness course, just start with one of the excellent apps out there — Headspace and Calm are two I often hear about. They do a great job of easing you into mindfulness and meditation.

    The Bottom Line

The most sustainable way to get healthy and stay healthy is to adjust your daily routines and habits. Making changes that have a positive effect each and every day outweighs all the other options in the long run.

Snapchat will stop promoting President Trump’s account

The company behind Snapchat announced Wednesday that it would stop promoting President Trump’s account on the social media app, saying it did not want to “amplify” those who “incite racial violence.” It’s the latest instance of a social media company taking steps in response to the president’s inflammatory posts, after Twitter last week began fact-checking and flagging violations in some of his tweets.

Snap Inc. said Mr. Trump’s account will no longer be promoted on Snapchat’s Discover tab, which boosts content from politicians, celebrities and news outlets. However, the president’s Snapchat account will still be active and available to the public.

“We are not currently promoting the president’s content on Snapchat’s Discover platform,” Snap said in a statement. “We will not amplify voices who incite racial violence and injustice by giving them free promotion on Discover. Racial violence and injustice have no place in our society and we stand together with all who seek peace, love, equality, and justice in America.”

Snap said it made the decision after Mr. Trump tweeted over the weekend that protesters outside the White House would be “greeted with the most vicious dogs, and most ominous weapons, I have ever seen.” Those messages did not appear on his Snapchat account.

Mr. Trump’s Snapchat account has more than 1.5 million followers. Unlike Twitter, which the president uses for direct communication with the public, the Snapchat account mostly features videos and memes promoting the president and his reelection campaign. It also sometimes posts screenshots of his tweets.

The Trump campaign recently told Bloomberg News that it saw Snapchat, and its Discover tab in particular, as a crucial space for attracting young voters.

The campaign responded with a statement Wednesday that included several false or unsubstantiated accusations about Snapchat’s move.

“Snapchat is trying to rig the 2020 election, illegally using their corporate funding to promote Joe Biden and suppress President Trump,” Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale said. The statement said Snapchat did not not want to “share the positive words of unity, justice, and law and order from our President.”

Twitter last week became the first social media company to draw a clear line on the president’s rhetoric, when it fact-checked a Trump tweet that contained falsehoods about voting. Twitter also flagged a different Trump tweet about protesters and said it was violating Twitter’s policy against “glorifying violence.”

Mr. Trump retaliated with an executive order on removing liability protections for social media companies over content posted by users, though it is certain to face legal challenges.

Meanwhile, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is standing by his decision not to take any action against the president’s posts, prompting some employees to stage a virtual walkout in protest.
