    What Can the Tech Industry Do?

    How you can help encourage more diversity and bring change to the tech industry

    George Floyd — a black man who will be etched into modern-day history. A man that sparked change and discussion around race relations. A man that in 2020, was murdered in broad daylight by police officers. Like many others, my hope is those involved will be brought to justice and that this will ignite a continued effort to bring equality to black people around the world.

    In each area of society, we need to work to dismantle systemic racism and improve the economic power that black people have. One industry — the one I work in, the one I enjoy, the one we all benefit from — is technology. Plenty has been written surrounding problems regarding diversity and inclusion in the tech industry, and with recent events, I think the case for diversity becomes even more overwhelming at this point.

    Efforts so far haven’t ignited huge change, but change is happening.

    I am part of a network called TLA Black Women in Tech. It’s part of the wider Tech London Advocates (TLA) network — both aim to amplify the voices of technology in the UK. TLA Black Women in Tech, in particular, was set up to support, mentor, and encourage diversity and inclusion in the UK. They post job, funding and network opportunities, events, and anything that helps move the industry forward in regards to black women.

    Meet Andy Davis, a black angel investor that is dedicated to pushing the culture forward and investing in black founders. Every Monday at 7 p.m. on his Instagram, black founders have the opportunity to pitch to him and his very engaged audience.

    Meet Jermaine Craig, who built Kwanda, a platform for people to invest in projects that benefit the black community.

    There are so many other organisations and individuals that are pushing the culture and paying it forward showcasing why we need diversity in tech. It’s us that are invested in using our technical skills to elevate our community, therefore, more of us are needed!

    So, What Can the Wider Technology Community Do?

    First and foremost, hire a more diverse workforce. All the obvious job networks are great, but why not in addition utilise job networks that are focussed on black and minority workers?

    Engage your local community. When I worked at Microsoft, they partnered with a charity that brought inner-city kids into our office, who were mentored by a group of us. Although I am not sure what happened to all the children we mentored, the environment of Microsoft in itself is so inspiring that I can only believe it had a positive impact on their future goals.

    Choose an organisation that is focussed on black development and work with them — whether it is financially, by providing speakers, mentoring and anything else that makes sense.

    I know some people will read this and think why do we need to become more diverse, everything is working fine. As we know, the world is becoming more diverse, so one, there isn’t really an excuse anymore — but don’t you want to create technology that represents our changing world?

    There are so many amazing black companies that, due to the typical VC landscape, just don’t understand the product, the founder, the community and therefore so many amazing companies are underfunded and don’t grow as quickly as they could have.

    And last but not least, it’s fun — working in a workplace that has a range of different individuals, with different perspectives, and different cultures, makes for a more interesting workday.

    This list is by no means exhaustive but starting points to move the needle in the right direction.

    Sony’s ‘daring’ PS5 design, new Spider-Man game and everything else we learned

    !Today Sony’s finally revealed the PlayStation 5 in full. It showcased a fresh white design alongside a new suite of games that includes the return of familiar characters interspersed with entirely new titles, some of which looked dazzling.

    The games were shown alongside the new look for the device, which is tall and thin and colored white on its front and back, with blue light and black accent colors on its sides. The company said it will reveal a price and launch date for the PS5 later. The company also said there will be a discless “all digital” version, which had been reported about since 2012.

    Sony is also calling in its friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to help launch its next generation PlayStation 5 video game console later this year. Spider-Man: Miles Morales will launch alongside its new PS5 console in time for the holiday shopping season, Sony said. The game will focus on Morales, a mixed-race character at the center of the hit 2019 movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.

    The announcement was part of an event Sony held on June 11 to discuss the new titles. The company had delayed the event after protests erupted around the world in response to the killing of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, while in police custody.

    Thursday’s event is the latest planned by Sony and Microsoft ahead of the launch of their respective PlayStation 5 and upcoming Xbox Series X consoles. The new devices, which are the first major new consoles since the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were released in 2013.

    Microsoft has another event planned for July, when it plans to show off new games from its own development studios — including 343 Industries, makers of the hit Halo space combat series and its newest title, Halo Infinite. Sony’s said it has more events planned, but hasn’t yet said when they’ll be.

    PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan touted Thursday’s event as a first look at games that’ll be made for the console. It was to be held entirely online and last about an hour.

    “We wanted to do something that was bold and daring almost,” said Sony’s PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan in an interview with CNET following the company’s reveal Thursday. “We wanted something forward facing and future facing, something for the 2020s.”

    Ryan declined to say how much the PS5 will cost, whether the discless all-digital version will be cheaper, or exactly when they will be made available. But he did say manufacturing remains on track despite the coronavirus pandemic, which has upended businesses around the globe as it infected more than 7.4 million people and killed more than 420,000 patients.

    Sony reiterated that more events are planned between now and the PS5 launch this fall, including when it’ll discuss pricing, launch date and other details. Ryan declined to discuss the future of Sony’s PlayStation VR virtual reality headset, its PlayStation Now streaming service, and whether Sony would offer a disc trade-in program for people who buy the all-digital PS5, saying more details will be revealed at later events.

    Sony showed more than two dozen games Thursday, nine of which were built by its game studios, including Insomniac Games, which made Spider-Man and the upcoming Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

    The Mantle of “Girl Developer”

    And why it should not exist

    To be a developer is all I wanted since my first “Hello world.” At the time, I was too young to understand the gender disparity in the workplace. I’ve always been a bit naive when it came to gender roles. I have a sister, not a brother, so I never experienced it growing up. I learned about it much later in life.

    I saw it at school when I picked my courses. I picked sciences — computer science among them — and in a class of 43, I was one of seven girls. The accounting classes were where most of the girls could be found. I saw it again when I picked Computer Science as a major; in my final year, I was one of five (I think). Whereas the information systems courses had many more girls. When I joined the workforce, I was the only girl in my back end development team for about four years.

    What frightens me is not the numbers. I know the numbers look like that everywhere. What frightens me is my attitude then, how I was treated, and how this treatment reinforced the wrong behaviour.

    Being one of seven, then one of five and then just one, made me feel special. It made me feel better than the other girls. It made me feel stronger and smarter than the other girls. I felt like I could succeed in a “man’s world,” in an environment other women were not strong enough to thrive in, in a field women did not have a natural aptitude for.

    Admitting that I had this horribly skewed view sickens me. I feel disgusted with myself.

    I have been fortunate enough to belong to a team where I’ve never been mistreated because of my gender. I found a way to befriend all of the men I have had the pleasure of working with. I swear with them, I drink with them, I write code with them. I return their banter by always giving as good as I get. I am indifferent to the language or jokes. Someone wanting to go out for drinks to socialize after work is welcomed by me and met with excitement. Me being this way paints a negative picture. It says: if this girl can adapt and be comfortable with this culture, surely other girls can be as well.

    What all this means for them, is a lower level of decorum is needed. What this meant for me is that when I sat in on interviews, I looked for the same strength to manage in this environment. When I looked at a girl moving from development to a non-development role, I saw it as a lack of strength to occupy this mantle.

    My belief that I was special, that my personality was compatible with tech culture, and the ease with which I worked and socialized with my colleagues — it’s the perfect recipe for a self-perpetuating cycle of “girl developers” that actually disempowers other women in the tech industry.

    Being a girl developer is a mantle that many women in tech hold up proudly. We wrinkle our noses at the women who struggle.

    I came to grips with this last year. I’m ashamed of my previous thought patterns. I’m proud that I can wrap my head around these problems, while my career is still young.

    This is a list of actions that I ‘ve been taking and truths that I have been accepting in an attempt to affect change in my team, and support the women who work around me:
    • I dispelled the notion that I am special. I realised that this idea was alienating me from other women.
    • I educate myself: I listen to audiobooks, I keep up with female developers in the industry via Twitter and I read their published works.
    • I recognize that my belief that women do not have a natural aptitude for software development stems from the hubris of a young girl treading water in her first job. I am continually discovering the many massive contributions by women to the industry.
    • I accept that gender roles play a huge part when picking careers. Just because I did not experience this growing up, does not mean it does not exist. In an attempt to remedy this, I speak at schools and colleges and I get involved in career days. I take every opportunity to explain why women developers are desperately needed in the tech industry.
    • I stopped looking at the environment as something you need strength to be a part of, and rather something you may need support in if it is a struggle — something that needs to change if it’s toxic.
    • I realised that while my personality may reinforce the negative expectation of women in tech, it’s who I am and not something I should change. Instead, I can use it to help bridge gaps and help make other women more comfortable.
    • I realised that I cannot change the culture in a weekend.
    • I talk more to other women at work.
    • When there’s an invitation for drinks or any social event, I seek out other woman, who may be nervous about joining, and let them know that if they decide to join, I’ll be there — at the very least, they will have me to talk to. This is my attempt to soothe social anxiety!
    • I make a concerted effort to coach women technically.
    • I am not afraid to raise issues that may make others uncomfortable. I accept that it is not my job to make people feel comfortable.
    • I remind myself and others, if need be, that men cannot be alienated. That you cannot shout problems at people and expect them to care just because you are shouting. If all other recourse fails, shouting may be the only way, but it isn’t the first step.
    • If you want to affect change, men cannot be seen as the enemy and instead should be brought in as allies.
    • If you want to affect change, you cannot categorise people as good or bad. Instead, keep in mind that not everyone has the same experiences. In other words, a man can’t have a woman’s point of view. This’s why we desperately need diversity. If people are deemed “bad” because they cannot relate to or understand someone else’s perspective, this is a disservice to them. Instead, honest conversation is what is needed.
    • I appreciate that honest conversation is not something one can just whip out. There needs to be a company culture that fosters this. I am lucky enough to belong to a company that has that culture.
    I’m not advocating that everyone adopts all of these things. All I’m saying is, be mindful. If you do have a compatible personality, look at it as less of an edge on everyone else, and more as a responsibility to help others that don’t. These situations are nuanced. It’s important to look critically around you, and then think analytically about what you see.

    “Girl Developer” is not a mantle we should take up proudly. Being the only woman in a team does not necessarily mean you’re special, it could also mean you are alone. As a woman on a tech team you should not be alone and “Girl Developer” should not be a mantle at all.

    Why Starbucks Is Spelling Your Name Wrong on Purpose

    “Hello Lynn-zee, would you like an espresso? How about you Tsach? Would you like one too?”

    I think it’s fair to say that Starbucks baristas are pretty lousy at spelling names. I’m sure many of us have had one of these moments.

    I wouldn’t think I have a “tough” name, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Starbucks employee got it wrong the first time around. So, when they write “Nite-ish” or “Nutish” on my cup, it leaves me unfazed.

    But what always perplexed me is when they got the names wrong for most of my friends. Trust me, they have extremely “common” names and the Starbucks employees would still get it wrong. Seriously? How is that possible?

    A misspelled name on the side of your Starbucks cup can prompt many reactions. Well, as a general rule, such incidents usually trigger a social media post, right? This is exactly what happened. Guilty as charged.

    Whenever such an incident occurs, my friends would post photos of the foozled spellings on at least one of their social media platforms, usually Instagram or Snapchat. This acts as a cue for their friends to notice this blunder and join in on the laughter marathon.

    I always thought Starbucks employees are messing with us and trying to make us laugh…but later I discovered it’s part of their marketing strategy.

    You may ask how on earth is this a marketing strategy?

    My response is: “have you ever posted about this spelling mistake incident on social media?” If your answer is “yes” then you are a clear victim of this strategy.

    Now, how does this strategy work?

    As many of us regularly demonstrate or have previously demonstrated, posting such pictures on social media helps them gain free publicity. Your other friends then view this image and tend to associate themselves with that familiar green logo.

    Cue evil laughter.

    Whether we like it or not, we have been giving Starbucks free advertising for years now. The misspelled name on your beverage tends to tug on the subconscious of your friends to go and buy exactly the same beverage, just to have their own names misspelled. Better yet, take a picture to post on social media which finally completes the cycle.

    Mind-blown yet?

    I mean, sure, it makes sense, but could it just be another conspiracy theory? (As if we don’t already have enough of them going around.)

    I honestly believe we could be onto something here…

    I’m a marketer, and I cannot confirm if they actually do it on purpose or if it’s a moment of human error.

    But I can guarantee that, sometimes, things can go viral without any planning. This is possibly the best thing that could happen to a brand, without having to drown millions of dollars on advertisement campaigns, promotions, etc. to generate revenue.

    Another part of me is convinced that “spell people’s names as incorrectly and strangely as you possibly can” is the first thing on the Starbucks employee manual. So, next time around, let’s be more aware of how Starbucks is using us to publicize their products.

    Oh, wait…I’m writing about them now. Ugh!

    Well done, Starbucks. Well done.
