Apple’s 5G iPhone is still expected to launch this year despite coronavirus, report says

Apple fans largely know what to expect from the next iPhone, from its likely new colors to its included super fast 5G wireless capabilities. What they’re not as sure of is the launch date.

The iPhone maker was among the first companies to raise the alarm about the coronavirus pandemic that’s infected more than 10.5 million people and killed more than half a million. In February, Apple warned that the coronavirus was hurting its ability to make iPhones, and would likely disrupt its business. Half a year later, Apple watchers are trying to figure out whether that’ll hurt its ability to launch the next iPhone too.

So far, rumors from Apple’s supply chain have said the phone will still launch in the fall, though supplies may be limited. Reporters at Nikkei said their unnamed sources indicated Apple is facing delays of between four weeks and two months for mass production of its 5G iPhones, largely due to the pandemic.

Apple said in an April conference call with analysts that its production capabilities have largely returned to normal, though that was before coronavirus infections around the world began to accelerate at a pace worrying health officials. Apple declined to comment.

Analysts and Apple fans are watching closely to see whether Apple is able to make its annual iPhone update in the fall. The new iPhones aren’t just important for Apple, which relies on the smartphone for more than half its revenue. Apple’s also served as a bellwether for the tech industry, giving early indications of production delays amid COVID-19 as well as when retail stores can reopen. The company, which has historically resisted allowing employees to work remotely or from home, is also being closely watched by its tech peers to see when staff will be brought back to its headquarters, or if they may be sent home again.

Apple will give its next major financial update on July 30 at 4:30 p.m. PT / 7:30 p.m. ET. CNET’s global team will cover Apple’s announcements, as well as others from large tech companies. And our coverage will include the real-time updates, commentary and analysis you can only get here.

Remote Work: Try Not to Work in Your Bedroom

If at all possible — find another space

When I accepted my Apple internship this summer I expected, as many other did, to be in Apple Park. I found the idea of working in that massive spaceship of a building extremely exciting, but the internship went remote.

If you had an internship lined up for the summer you were either one of the lucky ones and you went remote, or, unfortunately, your company decided to cancel their internship program.

My experience of being a remote intern has been a positive one so far. I’ve already had three in-person internships so I can’t say I’m missing out on that “in-person” experience as I’ve already had it a few times.

Like many people, I have a desk in my bedroom where I keep my personal laptop and monitor. As my internship hardware arrived, I didn’t make space on my desk for it. Instead, I found any space I could somewhere else in the house and started clearing it out to make a desk area. I did not want to do my internship in my bedroom!

I believe creating some sort of separation between work and free time — and some sort of commute — is key to staying productive and happy.

    The Commute

Last summer when I was an intern at Google I had a great commute. I loved the process of going to work in the morning Even though it wasn’t the most straightforward commute, I loved going to work in the morning because of all I got to experience. My commute consisted of a 15-minute walk from my house to the nearby Google campus, then I took a 10-minute bus to the Googleplex, and a 5-minute bike ride on one of Google’s army of bikes to finish.

With all of this, I got to get a bunch of fresh air and sunlight and a little bit of exercise. It was great. It allowed me to get outside and mentally shift to and from the software engineer mindset. It gave me separation.

With my current commute, I get out of bed and walk a few feet into the next room. No fresh air, no sunlight, no exercise. But the fact that I had to move at all is a start. If I set up my home office in my bedroom I probably wouldn’t even leave my room until noon!

Because I’m forced to do at least a little movement in my life, it tends to inspire me to do a little bit more. I’ll go for a quick run down the road or take my dog outside. It’s not a true commute but it’s something. While many people loathe commuting the separation is key to keeping your mental health intact. If there’s no separation you only focus on work 24/7 which is not healthy.

    The Office

My home office for the summer is by no means fancy. It’s just a laptop sitting on a desk. Every time I walk into that simple room it puts me in the correct mindset. When I enter I know its time to speak professionally, remain focused on the tasks at hand, and deliver good code.

I associate that room with work, in the same way that people associate work with their in-person office. If I kept my office in my room I be confused — that’s also the place I sleep, relax, and play games — what mindset should I be in? If I have my personal laptop right next to my work, I’ll probably begin to think about work at a time I should be resting or relaxing.

The core theme here is separation. With many companies, like Slack, giving people the option to remain remote forever it’s likely that this work from home situation is here to say. If it’s here to say, we have to make sure that it’s not destroying our mental state and that work isn’t sneaking into our home life. Creating that separation with a pseudo commute and office is a great way to do that.

How to Get a Software Engineering Internship in High School

My experience getting two internships before graduating from high school

Internships have historically been a differentiator, but with the growing competition, graduating with an internship is no longer something that distinguishes — it’s a requirement.

In very competitive fields such as computer science, many students are graduating with two, and in rare cases in three, internships. With the bar being set so high, it makes it hard to catch up if you didn’t get an early start.

Lots of people think the time to start seeking their first internship is in their sophomore year — this is incredibly bad advice. At the very latest, you should be looking for an internship in your freshman year of college.

There are so many opportunities to take advantage of, it’d be a waste to ignore them. With programs like Google STEP, Explore Microsoft, and Facebook University targeted specifically at freshman and sophomore students, opportunities to get an internship your freshman year are as abundant as ever.

But can you start your internship search before your freshman year? Common knowledge says no, but there are plenty of unique ways you can go about getting an internship while still in high school that don’t require you knowing anybody.

By the time I graduated high school, I had two internships, both at Lockheed Martin. In high school, I competed in Lockheed Martin’s Code Quest programming competition all four years. I did it just because I enjoyed doing programming contests, but by my junior year, the company announced they’d be opening an exclusive internship application for participants of the contest — and I jumped on it. I applied to Lockheed, had a couple of interviews, and then before I knew it, I was a software engineering intern in my junior year of high school.

Participating in programming contests isn’t the only way, though; there are a few key strategies I think are useful when trying to seek out an internship while in high school. This advice also applies to any major — though, I’ll be speaking from the perspective of someone going into computer science.

Participate in Company Competition and Events

This is a big one (it’s how I got my internship), and it’s approachable no matter where you live. Lots of companies host programming competitions. Lockheed Martin’s Code Quest competition is held at 27 locations across the United States (as well as in Australia, the United Kingdom, and Singapore).

If you’re close to any of those locations, I’d encourage participating in the contest and applying for their program.

A lot of companies also host corporate hackathons that anyone can participate in. JP Morgan is one such company that hosts a hackathon that many people receive internships from. Don’t be discouraged to apply to something if it says it’s for college students only — you never know who’ll be reading your application.

Additionally, lots of companies show up to university hackathons, and a lot of those hackathons allow any student to compete. Try asking your local university if high schoolers are allowed to join their competition, and I’m sure an affirmative response will come your way.

Reach out to Smaller Local Companies

When most people think of internships they immediately think Google or bust. This is an awful mindset. You don’t have to start at a FAANG company to make it — you can start anywhere.

There are a lot of smaller tech companies and startups in every city that’d be happy to interview high schoolers. The company Sighthound took on high schoolers as interns in Orlando.

Obviously a smaller company, this is a prime example of the type of company you’d want to reach out to. If you try to reach out to a Google or Facebook, typically you’d reach an automated service or a recruiter who is only interested in interviewing top-tier college students.

With a smaller local company, there’s a greater chance for real human interaction. If you contact them, there’s a better chance you’d be able to talk to a real person at the company about your aspiration and what you hope to accomplish.

Even if that local company isn’t seeking or doesn’t allow high school interns — ask if you can shadow a software engineer there. You’d be able to learn what goes on in their day and create a connection with that engineer that may prove valuable later on (when you get into college, you have a great contact to reach out to for a job).

The important lesson here is to get creative in your approach, there’s more to the search than applying to Facebook and calling it a day — there’s a ton of companies and tons of opportunities out there to be found.

Reach Out to Major Companies If You Live in a Tech Hub

This is my only piece of advice that depends on where you live. I grew up in Orlando — not a major tech hub — so this advice didn’t apply to me. But if you live in New York City, Seattle, the Bay, or even a regional tech hub like Atlanta or Dallas, then this applies to you.

A lot of major companies (think Big N) will host local interns. Microsoft has an internship program for local high schoolers in Seattle. Bloomberg hosts New York City high schoolers as interns. BlackRock similarly hosts high school interns if you’re fortunate enough to live near one of their offices.

These are just a few examples, but there are many more companies that do this, and even if it’s not a company-wide policy, you can always reach out to your local office and see what they say — the worst they can do is say no.

“I Really Tried to Get an Internship in High School, and I Failed”

That’s totally fine. Most kids don’t get an internship in high school. There’s still a lot to be gained from the hunt. You’ve learned about different companies, the recruitment process, and how to apply for jobs — those are invaluable skills that you’ll carry with you into college.

So whether you attempt to get a high school internship and fail or you do get one, remember to keep your eyes peeled for all the opportunities once you get into college. And make sure to enjoy the process along the way.

Coronavirus cases hit 10 million as outbreaks surge in the US, Brazil and India

The daily number of coronavirus cases continues to rise across the globe, with the World Health Organization on Sunday reporting the highest number of recorded cases in a 24-hour period. The increase saw the pandemic reach another grim milestone as the total number of confirmed cases crossed 10 million with 500,000 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 database. Over 5 million are listed as recovered.

In the US, regional surges in the South and West drove cases to a record weekly high, according to analysis by the Atlantic’s COVID Tracking Project. The country accounts for more than a quarter of all cases and deaths. Daily deaths have continued to decline in the US even as cases reach new highs, a phenomenon not currently seen in other countries with surging cases.

“This is a very serious situation,” US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said during an appearance Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press. “People, as individuals, have to act responsibly. We need to social distance, we need to wear our face coverings if we’re in settings where we can’t social distance.”

There is some suggestion that new cases are being found in younger age groups — those at a lower risk of dying from COVID-19. “We’ve gotten reports from our governors that the majority of cases are aged 35 and under,” Azar said. A lag between deaths and reporting could also see deaths rise in July.

Two other countries are reporting significant increases in daily infections: Brazil and India. The former has recorded over 1.3 million confirmed cases and over 57,000 deaths. India currently has the fourth-highest number of cases behind the US, Brazil and Russia, but daily cases are rising, with nearly 20,000 reported on Sunday.

Last week, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO, said the pandemic was entering a “new and dangerous phase”. On Wednesday, he made a point of reiterating the disparity between the first month of the outbreak, where 10,000 cases were reported to the WHO, with the current month, in which 4 million cases have been reported.

“This is a sobering reminder that even as we continue research into vaccines and therapeutics we have an urgent responsibility to do everything we can with the tools we have now to suppress transmission and save lives,” Ghebreyesus said during the press briefing on June 24.
